Wasps are a common sight in much of the Southern United States. Wasps are commonly regarded as pests and all species can sting painfully.
The term yellow jacket refers to a number of different species of wasps. Yellow jackets are a type of communal wasp about half an inch long. Yellow jackets are very aggressive and may sting repeatedly, making it important for humans to avoid them. They have bright yellow-and-black markings and nests can be found along the edge of forests or wooded areas low in trees. Yellow jackets also build nests in old buildings, abandoned cars, and other enclosed spaces like voids in walls and ceilings of houses.
Other species of wasps hang their comb nests from branches of trees and shrubs, porch ceilings, the tops of window and doorframes, eaves, attic rafters, underneath deck floors and railings. Colonies, which are begun each spring by a single reproductive female, can reach populations of between 1,500 and 15,000 individuals, depending on the species.
The best way to prevent unpleasant encounters with wasps is to avoid them. If you know where wasps are, try not to go near their nesting place. Wasps become very defensive when their nest is disturbed. Be on the lookout for wasps that are flying directly in and out of a single location as they are probably flying to and from their nest. Once food is discovered by wasps, they will continue to hunt around that location long after the source has been removed.
Wasp stingers have no barbs and can be used repeatedly, especially when the wasp gets trapped inside clothing. As with any stinging insect, it is best to leave the area of the nest site and contact a professional.
