First, Clean Up Your Lawn

Sure, you spent all of that time back in the fall raking and cleaning your lawn in anticipation of the winter months, but quite a few things have happened since then! No doubt, debris has gotten knocked onto your lawn in the quite a few storms we’ve had recently. Now, it’s time to get out there and clean things up. Just as you would in the autumn months, you’ll want to get out on your lawn with a rake to clear away any debris. This will make doing everything else that you need to do in order to get your lawn into tip-top shape so much easier!

Aerate Your Lawn

There are many aspects of lawn care that people focus upon, and to their lawns’ detriment aeration is not one of those things. Don’t be that person! Aerating your lawn is a powerful way to get it to be as lush and green as you want it to be. Doing this accomplishes a number of things. Most importantly, aerating dramatically reduces soil compaction, allowing the grass’ roots to expand into the ground, as they need to. This also makes it much easier for water, nutrients, and air to get into the soil, which further facilitates lawn growth. So, after you get your lawn clear of debris, make sure you aerate it!

Freshen Up Dull Spots

Once the new grass tips start ‘springing’ up, you’re probably going to notice a few spots on your lawn where the turf cover seems to have dried up a bit. Those places won’t just come back on their own; you’ve got to help them along. So, once you’ve found all the dull spots, go about the process of re-seeding them! It’s a great idea to do this immediately after you’ve finished aerating the lawn, as the seeds will have plenty of places to fall into and grow. Just be sure that you’re not reseeding these areas in combination with any herbicides, as that will completely prevent the grass from taking root.

Always Water in the Morning

A healthy lawn is one that receives an adequate amount of water, never too much and never too little. One mistake that many people make when watering their lawns is doing so at night. While it might be more convenient to water the lawn after you’re home from work for the day, watering at night can cause a number of problems.

Because the sun isn’t out overnight, excess water doesn’t have the chance to evaporate away. This can increase the chance of lawn disease developing. Instead, try to do all of your lawn watering in the morning, as this will ensure that any excess water doesn’t remain on your lawn for too long.
