Get Rid of Fire Ants
Serving the Louisiana & Mississippi Gulf Coast For Over 50 Years
The fire ant is common in 12 southern states, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama.
Fire ants like moisture and nest in the soil near river banks, the edge of ponds, lawns that get watered, and highway edges. Usually, the fire ant nest is not visible, as it is built under objects such as logs, bricks, timber, under sidewalks, near a structural foundation, or in walls of buildings. The fire ant will enter a building through holes or cracks.
Over 40 million people live in fire ant infested areas in the southeastern United States. Fire ants become very agitated and aggressive when nests are disturbed and can quickly climb onto the object or person in the vicinity and begin stinging. A single fire ant can bite and sting its victim repeatedly. Between 30% and 60% of the people living in fire ant infested areas are stung each year. The sting of a fire ant is painful and many times results in a raised welt that becomes a white pustule. Persons allergic to fire ant stings will react more severely.
Fire ants feed on plant or animal material, including other insects, ticks, ground-nesting animals, young trees, seedlings, plant buds, fruits, and seeds. In addition to their stings, the fire ant causes problems by building its nests around trees, yard plants, pipes, and in the walls of structures, and outdoor electrical fixtures. Because fire ants can sting en masse, most people will want to keep them off their property.
