Pharoah Ants in SE Louisiana and Mississippi
Pharaoh ants are found throughout Louisiana and Mississippi and are very difficult ant to control. Colonies vary greatly in size and splinter off to form new colonies when disturbed. Infestations of Pharaoh ants can spread rapidly, due to their splintering ability. These ants can easily form colonies with over 300,000 workers and multiple queens. Indoors, Pharaoh ants nest in any well-protected and hidden areas and prefer lawns and gardens, outdoors.
Pharaoh Ant Habitat
Pharaoh ants feed on sweets, proteins, and live or dead insects. These almost transparent ants nest outside in shaded areas or under debris. In homes, Pharaoh ants nest in hard-to-reach spots near moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. They will also nest inside walls, under floors, and behind baseboards. In commercial buildings, they are found in kitchens, around toilets, heating ducts, and pipes. Using plumbing pipes and electrical wires, Pharaoh ants can travel from room to room, spreading throughout a structure quickly.
Pharaoh Ant Behaviors, Threats or Dangers
Pharaoh ants are known to spread more than a dozen diseases, including salmonella and streptococcus. They can be a serious pest in hospitals due to their ability to transmit disease. Because of their tiny size, Pharaoh ants can access almost any space, infecting food as they forage. They can also survive most conventional household pest control treatments. Due to this resistance, they can establish large colonies throughout a home or building. If a Pharaoh ant infestation is suspected, it is recommended to contact a licensed ant exterminator.
