Spring Cleaning Tips for Keeping Pests Out of Your Home

March 9, 2015By

The winter months are rapidly coming to a close and the spring months will be upon us before we know it! While everyone’s certainly excited about the warmer weather, it’s important to remember that with warmer weather come pests. Because of this, you’ll want to take some steps during your spring cleaning process to prevent pests from becoming a problem over the spring and summer months. With that in mind, here are some things you can do in order to limit the impact of pests in your home.

pest control

Deep Clean Your Kitchen

You like your kitchen because it’s full of delicious food, and pests love your kitchen because it’s full of delicious food. Of course, it’s not the food that’s in your cabinets and refrigerator that pests are after (mostly), it’s the food that’s fallen underneath the refrigerator, behind the stove, and into all of those other hard-to-get-to places. When you break out the cleaning supplies in your kitchen, take the time to get into all of these places, removing little bits of food that have been accumulating.

Check Your Screens

Once it gets warm out, you’re going to want to open the windows to let the fresh air in. But, you don’t want pests to ride that fresh air into your home! So, be sure to go around your house and check out the screens on your windows. If any of them are in disrepair, torn, or have holes, replace them or patch them up. All it takes is one tiny hole in one of your window screens to let more than a few nasty pests in.

Trim the Hedges

While you’re investigating your window screens, also take the time to check out any hedges, bushes, or trees that are directly adjacent to your home. If any of them are coming into contact with your home’s exterior, or may in the coming growing season, then trim them back. All kinds of pests – especially the larger, nastier ones – can use these plants as any easy bridge into your home. Keeping them out is as simple as removing that bridge!

Seal Those Cracks

Of course, pests don’t need to bother with your windows if there are perfectly good cracks in your foundation or elsewhere on the exterior of your home for them to use. So, as you’re surveying things on the outside, check around for any cracks. If you manage to find any, be sure to seal them up! Keep in mind, too, that sometimes cracks can form around your windows and doors. So, be sure to check out those areas, too!

Eliminate Areas of Standing Water

Mosquitoes are well known to congregate around pools of stagnant water. So, if you know this, why would you allow these puddles to be anywhere on your property? Go around and ensure that there are no pools of water for mosquitoes to congregate around. In particular, you’ll want to check around air conditioning units, outdoor appliances, and anywhere where there are exposed pipes.

Check Your Firewood

If you had firewood located conveniently next to your home for the winter months, then now might be the time to move it. First, you’ll want to make sure that the firewood is stacked off of the ground, as this can lead to decay. Secondly, you’ll want to make sure that your pile of firewood isn’t leaning against your home. Having firewood leaning on your home is a surefire way to invite pests!
