Termites are the bane of many a homeowner’s existence and one of the worst nightmares you can face if you want to protect your property from infestation and serious damage. However as bad as that idea is, it can get even worse in the wrong circumstances.
Formosan termites are a prime example of when bad news gets even worse. You definitely don’t want to have to deal with these resilient and extremely destructive pests but if you ever find yourself facing them, it’s important for you to understand what you’re going up against.
What Makes Formosan Termites Different?
The thing that stands out immediately is how extremely hard to kill these termites are. While strong conventional termite treatments have been shown in many cases to help slow down or contain limited Formosan termite infestations, they have often failed to eliminate the problem completely. Formosan termites can breed prolifically and tend to have much larger colonies than their much easier to contain cousins.
Other treatments that are all but assured slam dunks for getting rid of normal termites, often slow down Formosan infestations but don’t stop them. This can become a major nightmare for a home or business owner finding their home or livelihood at stake.
What Are the Options for Dealing with Formosan Termites?
The first thing to understand is that you need to contact a professional. This isn’t any ordinary run of the mill infestation. On top of being hard to kill, Formosan termites can be found almost anywhere. They might be in the walls of your building, in the basement in mud tunnels, or even further away on the property. Locating every nearby colony is critical to dealing with the issue, and there might be more than one. These are details you cannot afford to miss!
When it comes to treatment options there are several, and don’t be surprised if an experienced exterminator recommends using several of them in conjunction. Even with a normally fantastic treatment like Termidor, you can expect follow up treatments and combinations to be on the safe side when it comes to dealing with Formosan termites.
One popular method is to create tamper-resistant baits for termites that are then placed all around the infested area. This means floors, walls, and even in patches of soil around the house. Hopefully the termites take the bait, move it back to the colony, and then the poison spreads from there. Bait methods are popular because even if fumigation fails, this gives another opportunity to get to the heart of the problem: nearby colonies.
Fumigation is all out war on termites in your home. The family will have to move for a certain amount of time, usually lasting a weekend or so. This is the classic form of pest control where a large tent is placed firmly over the house and then termite-killing gas is released throughout the building.
This works best for killing dry wood termites and Formosan termites that are above ground. This is extremely effective for clearing out an infestation (assuming it is not underground) but it offers no long term protection after the treatment. You may think of it as a one-time cleanse, but it is a thorough one.
Soil treatments for termites often go hand in hand with treated foam for wall voids. This is where liquid and foam products that are poisonous to the termites are filled into a wide array of cracks, crevices, and other infested areas in order to eliminate any termite colonies in those areas.
This material is carried back to the nest and will kill all the termites that come into contact with it, but it requires a long wait to spread effectively.
