November 22, 2016By

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder so there’s no longer a need to worry about bed bugs, right? Wrong! Bed bugs live in the winter too, unfortunately. As long as the little buggers have a place to get food, the cold isn’t going to kill them off. Learn more about the truth behind winter bed bugs, how to prevent them, and how to get rid of them if they have already shown up.

The Unfortunate Truth

Even though it seems like nothing could survive in the cold winter temperatures, bed bugs do. Too bad for homeowners, the insects do not hibernate during these times and so they are still a very real concern.

It is true that like most any living thing, if exposed to cold weather for a long enough time, they will die. However, scientist got together and figured out just what it would take to get the critters to curl up the cold conditions.

Three and a half days, or 80 hours is what it’s going to take to freeze bed bugs out. The temperature has to be at around 3 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius) for the entire duration of the freeze out if you are planning to try something like this at home. Probably not the most logical way to get rid of them, but it is possible.

Prevent Bedbugs

The easiest way to get rid of bedbugs is by preventing them from coming in. Sounds easy right? Well, it is, unless you are someone that travels or likes to buy used furniture.

Going to stay at a hotel sounds relaxing, until you come home and unpack a few extra guests. Just make sure you wash all of your clothes, linens, and outerwear as soon as you get home. Fabric luggage should be carefully inspected and cleaned too.

Getting a great bargain at an estate sale is something that you live for. Not that you can’t do it, just be cautious of what you are getting. The furniture is obviously not going to be new so there is a higher chance of an infestation. Check for them and their droppings before bringing your new find into your home.

Get Rid of Bedbugs

Have the annoying insects already made themselves comfortable in your furniture or bedding? That means you have a gigantic job ahead of you, unless you want to throw everything out and start over. Buying all new pieces of furniture isn’t always financially possible and that’s why you should call in a professional.

They will come out and give you an inspection to confirm your worries of actually having an infestation. Pros know right away what kind of treatment is going to be most effective. You will save yourself a lot of time, money, and headache just by hiring someone that knows what they are doing.
