Weed Control from Fischer Environmental in Mississippi and LouisianaWeeds: unwanted plants, invading your lawn! Most weeds are native plants that have found the conditions of your lawn to be ideal. The lawn conditions that favor weeds are also conditions that can destroy turfgrass. As turfgrass dies, weeds have more room to grow, continuing the endless cycle of weeds. As an example, crabgrass and dollar weeds thrive under very wet conditions. St. Augustine and Bahia turfgrasses will become infected with various fungi under very wet conditions. Weeds then have the room to grow, and as the St. Augustine and Bahia turfgrasses die, the weeds will take over. The first step of weed control is a thick and healthy lawn that is supported by the implementation of good horticultural practices.

Weed Control Service For Your Lawn

The most common environmental or horticultural conditions that favor weed development are excessive moisture, inadequate moisture, mowing too low, and insufficient sunlight. Weeds that thrive under very wet conditions include crabgrass, dollar weed, and sedge. Weeds that thrive under dry conditions include Alexander grass, Florida and Brazil pusley, and spurge. Low mowing will thin the turf, making it too short to thrive, and that will allow any and all weeds to thrive. Weeds that love low light conditions would include annual jew grass and broadleaf weeds like Asiatic hawksbeard.

Correcting these horticultural conditions can be as simple as reducing or increasing your watering, or raising your mower blade. It may also involve installing an underground system to improve drainage, or thinning the canopy of your trees. There are some situations where growing turfgrass just isn’t an option, like in areas where the light cannot be increased. In these cases, planting a different plant material is the best approach.

Our lawn care programs can greatly affect the health of your lawn. We can control insects and provide proper nutrition. When needed, we can treat fungus problems, weeds, and other diseases. We can even prevent cyclical weeds, like winter annuals or the occasional spots of crabgrass in the summer.

Chronic weed problems created by the effects of poor environmental conditions cannot be overcome by the use of pesticides or herbicides. In these situations, if weed control is ever expected to be achieved, the condition favoring the development of the weed must be identified and corrected.
