Why It’s Necessary to Your Health to Keep Pests Out of Your Home this Winter

When we talk of pests, rarely do we think of creatures such as opossums, raccoons, and squirrels. But they are pests and some of the worst you can have on your property.

Why? Well, other than trashing bins and causing mayhem, there is the ever-present danger that they might be carrying diseases. This is certainly something that you can do without and it is imperative to protect your family. Let’s examine the problem a little closer.

Raccoons

Raccoons may look cute and cuddly but these pests carry a number of diseases that can infect humans. Perhaps the most dangerous is rabies. Anyone bitten by a raccoon should seek immediate medical attention.

Coming into contact with raccoon feces may expose a person to raccoon roundworm. This can be contracted through the eggs of the roundworm which are easily transmitted to humans by contact and even inhalation. Once infected, this parasitic larva will travel to the host’s central nervous system.

Exposure to food or water contaminated by these pests could lead to severe cases of diarrhea while other diseases these creatures carry include Trypanosoma Cruizi, Rickettsia Rickettsii, Salmonella, and Leptospirosis.

Squirrels

Although they do not carry as many diseases as raccoons, squirrels can have a number of parasites which get left in their feces. They often live in attics, so if you don’t get rid of them, you are exposing yourself to these parasites as well as Leptospirosis and Salmonella.

Opossums

Although opossums are the best of a bad bunch thanks to a hardy immune system, they still carry parasites and fleas. Much like squirrels, opossums like to live in the attic where they will leave their feces. This poses health risks as well and could expose your family to Salmonella and Leptospirosis.
